Without connecting a bank
A subscription finder that doesn’t require connecting your bank
The best-known subscription managers — Rocket Money among them — work by connecting to your bank accounts and reading your live transactions. That’s convenient, but not everyone wants to grant a third party ongoing access to their accounts. If that’s you, here’s an approach that doesn’t require it.
The difference in approach
Two ways in, your choice: connect a bank or card account through Plaid (read-only transaction access — you sign in at your bank, and LowScout never receives your bank username or password), or export a PDF/CSV statement and upload it. Both feed the same analysis; neither is required. You choose which statement to share; LowScout reads it, finds the recurring charges, and shows what they add up to.
| Bank-connection apps | LowScout | |
|---|---|---|
| How it finds subscriptions | Connects to your bank accounts and reads your live transactions. | Reads a statement (PDF or CSV) that you export and upload yourself — or, only if you choose, transactions from an account you connect through Plaid (read-only). |
| Bank login required | Yes — you grant access to your accounts through an aggregator. | Optional. Upload a statement with no bank connection at all, or connect through Plaid — where you sign in at your bank and LowScout never receives your bank login. |
| How the numbers are produced | Varies by app. | Exact arithmetic from your statement, with the transactions shown behind each total. |
| Cancelling | Some offer to cancel on your behalf, often as a paid feature. | Guides you with reviewed, step-by-step instructions; you cancel, LowScout doesn’t. |
Where LowScout is honest about the trade-off
Uploading a statement is a manual step a bank connection avoids: when LowScout reads a file rather than a feed, nothing updates until you upload the next one. If you would rather not repeat that step, the optional Plaid connection syncs periodically instead — still read-only, and still your choice. Every total is exact arithmetic from the statement you uploaded, with the transactions behind each number shown — nothing is estimated or invented.
