Cancel a subscription

How to cancel any subscription — and remember the rest

Almost every failed cancellation comes down to one thing: people cancel in the wrong place, or forget they were subscribed at all. Here is the rule that fixes the first, and a way to handle the second.

The one rule: cancel where you were billed

A subscription is cancelled wherever the charge is set up — not necessarily inside the app. There are three places it can live:

  • The Apple App Store — if you subscribed on an iPhone or iPad. Cancel in Settings → your name → Subscriptions.
  • Google Play — if you subscribed on Android. Cancel in the Play Store under Payments & subscriptions.
  • The company directly — if you subscribed on their website. Cancel in your account on their site.

Deleting the app never cancels the subscription. Neither does deleting your account when an app store is the biller. Here is why.

And remember the rest

Cancelling one subscription is easy. The harder part is the ones you have forgotten — the trials that turned into paid plans and the charges spread across different cards. The fix is to see the whole list in one place, then confirm each cancellation actually stopped the charge on your next statement.
