Why deleting an app doesn’t cancel the subscription

This is the single most common reason people keep paying for something they thought they cancelled.

Deleting an app removes the software from your device. The subscription is a billing arrangement held somewhere else — in the App Store, in Google Play, or with the company directly — and it keeps renewing whether or not the app is installed.

Where the subscription actually lives

  • Signed up on an iPhone or iPad: usually billed by Apple. Cancel in Settings → your name → Subscriptions.
  • Signed up on Android: often billed by Google Play. Cancel in the Play Store under Payments & subscriptions.
  • Signed up on the company’s website: billed directly by the company. Cancel in your account on their site.

The same logic for deleting your account

Deleting your account with the service is not the same as cancelling a subscription billed by an app store, either. If Apple or Google is the biller, the charge continues until you cancel it there — closing the account does not reach the billing.

What to do instead

Cancel the subscription where it is billed first, confirm it, and only then remove the app if you want to. Keep an eye on your next statement to be sure the charge has actually stopped.

Questions

Does deleting my account cancel a subscription?
Not if an app store bills it. When Apple or Google is the biller, the subscription keeps renewing until you cancel it in the App Store or Google Play — deleting your account with the service does not reach that billing.
